Destined for Tragedy (Tryptic: Self Destruction, Poison, Heal), Image Transfer on Calico, engraved frame, 2024.

Destined for Tragedy is the placing of scenes from 20 New Queer Cinema films (1985 and 2005) into three categories: Healing, Poison, and Self-Destruction. The resulting piece matches the most relevant scene from each film to its corresponding theme. These films are often tragic, reflecting the lives of the queer community during the AIDS crisis. I found that these films set a precedent, with award-winning queer films today often portraying queerness as a source of inner turmoil or violence.

Each frame includes a family picture related to the theme, conveying the search for queer Eastern European representation. I also used the inaccuracy and pencil-like texture of image transfers to highlight the personal nature of the archive.
